The Boston Red Sox will be without another member of their starting rotation to start the regular season. The right-hander Lucas Giolito will start the season on the injured list with a low-level left-back strain, said manager Alex Cora on Thursday. Giolito left the start on Tuesday with tension in his hamstrings and an MRI revealed the tension.
“We are going to be tested right away,” said Cora about the team’s depth of rotation (via the Boston globe).
Even before Giolito’s injury, the Red Sox had to start the season without his right -handed colleagues Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford. Belllo faces a shoulder problem and Crawford a knee problem dates back to last season. Boston’s depth of rotation board is currently looking like this:
- LHP Garrett Crochet
- Rhp Tanner Houck
- Rhp Walker Buehler
Rhp Brayan Bello(will miss the start of the season with a painful shoulder)Rhp Lucas Giolito(will miss the start of the season with tension with hamstrings)Rhp Kutter Crawford(will miss the start of the season with knee pain)LHP Patrick Sandoval(will miss most of 2025 after internal skill surgery)- Rhp Quinn PRIESTER
- RHP Richard Fitts
- Rhp Josh Winckowski
The good news is that the best three starters from Boston are all healthy. The hook, Houck and Buehler are the guys whose Red Sox really need to stay on the ground. The depth behind the first three, however, took a big blow. PRIESTER had a hard time missing bats at the MLB and Winckowski level was much more effective as a starter than as a lifter throughout his career.
Giolito, 30, missed the 2024 season after having the internal bustle procedure, which is an alternative to Tommy John surgery. Internal accumulation can only be used for certain partial tears and is delivered with a shorter recovery time. The start of Tuesday was the first in the spring of Giolito and came almost a year on the day of his operation. He granted two points in the round before leaving.
In 2023, his last healthy season, Giolito launched 184 â…“ Sleeping with a 4.88 MPM while bouncing chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Guardians. The Red Sox gave it a $ 38.5 million contract over two years last winter. Unsurprisingly, Giolito refused to use a desire for winter after missing last season with elbow surgery.
About all Al East teams are faced with major injuries this spring. New York Yankees will be without Gerrit Cole (Tommy John Plegery), Luis Gil (Lat Strain) and Giancarlo Stanton (elbows) to start the season. The Orioles of Baltimore will not have Kyle Bradish (Tommy John Surgery), Grayson Rodriguez (Elbow) or Andrew Kittredge (knee). Al East will be a war of attrition.
The Red Sox went 81-81 last year and then had a big off-season, which allowed Alex Bregman in addition to the hook and Buehler.
