Barcelona’s Dani Olmo’s registration rejected by court

Barcelona risks having Daniel Olmo unavailable for the second half of the season after a court rejected the club’s suit to extend the striker’s registration beyond December 31.

Olmo, a 57 million euro ($59.5 million) summer signing from RB Leipzig, has been granted temporary La Liga registration until the end of the year to cover a long-term injury suffered by Andreas Christensen.

Barca was seeking a court order to extend the two players’ registrations until the end of the season, arguing at a hearing on Monday that failure to do so would go against workers’ rights in Spain.

The Catalan club had presented a similar case to register the midfielder Gavi with the first team in 2023.

On this occasion they won, so it is surprising that Friday’s decision did not go in their favor.

LaLiga released a statement on Friday welcoming the court’s decision.

“LaLiga took note today of the judgment (…) rejecting the request for provisional registration of Dani Olmo until June 30, 2025, on the grounds that none of the conditions necessary for the adoption of a provisional measure are “is full,” she said. .

The annual spending cap imposed by Barça in La Liga is set at 426 million euros for the season.

They still do not respect this limit and, therefore, face certain restrictions when it comes to registering new additions.

La Liga rules only allow them to spend a percentage of whatever they raise on transfer fees or save on wages, while they can also create more room in their cap by increasing their income.

The membership’s approval of a new multi-year deal with kit supplier Nike last week helps in that sense, but sources told ESPN it won’t be enough to make Olmo’s registration go through.

That registration is due to expire next week and with Barca still exceeding their league-set annual spending limit, sources have told ESPN that the club is currently working on two possible scenarios to extend it.

The first involves the pre-sale of VIP seats at the redeveloped Spotify Camp Nou, and the second involves a board member providing a personal guarantee to enable registration, a route having previously been taken to guarantee Jules Koundéthe registration of in 2022 and Joao Felix And João Canceloit’s in 2023.

Striker Paul Victorsigned from Girona last July, is also in the same position as Olmo.

Mundo Deportivo previously reported that if the registration is not processed, Olmo could leave for free, although sources close to the club and the player have played down the possibility.

Barca president Joan Laporta has expressed confidence that Olmo and Victor’s registrations will both be extended, but the club now faces a race against time to ensure that is the case.

Laporta has already stated that beyond the legal route, Barça is also pursuing other avenues to extend registrations beyond December 31.
