With Michigan’s defeat against Maryland Wednesday eveningSpartans have an advance of two defeats on Wolverines with two games to play, which means that even if they lose their last two competitions against Iowa and Michigan, the worst they can do is first of all.
This is a great success for a program that barely escaped the bubble of the NCAA tournament.
But Spartans have more important objectives than a shared title. Thursday’s match against Iowa means that MSU can now claim the pure and simple crown of the regular season by beating the Hawkeyes, which would also hear all the pressure from a revenge match with Michigan on Sunday.

With the extended league of 18 teams this year, the three low teams will not make the post-season event in Indianapolis which begins next Wednesday. The Hawkeyes enter Thursday with the USC for the last place in the field of 15 teams, with Washington (4-14) and Penn State (5-14) already eliminated and the Trojan horses having a main victory over Iowa.
Winning or losing against Iowa, the state of Michigan will have a lot to play against a team from Michigan who will have come to take revenge. The Spartans beat the Wolverines on their home floor last month, 75-62, and will go again at noon Sunday on CBS during the regular season final for the two teams.
