Behind-the-Scenes Reason Behind Chelsea Green's WWE United States Championship Win

After six years of scratching, clawing, and returning to WWE following her 2021 release, Chelsea Green finally had her moment this past weekend and made history in the process. With a victory over Michin in Saturday Night’s main event, Green became the first-ever WWE United States Women’s Champion, winning her first-ever WWE singles title and her first championship since she hosted the women’s tag team championships with Sonya Deville and Piper Niven last year.

As for why Green received this prestigious honor over the other women in the US women’s title tournament, a lot of it seems to come from all of her work since returning to WWE. On the latest edition of “Wrestling Observation Radio”, Dave Meltzer said Green’s win came because WWE wanted to reward her for bouncing back from the past year, despite struggling with what Meltzer described as a “joke” character.

After re-signing with WWE in January 2023, Green took on what many thought was a parody of “Karen”, making fun of privileged white women. Whether it was the gimmick or other reasons, Green remained stuck in the lower card of WWE’s women’s division for the next few months, before winning the women’s titles with Deville in July. Despite renewed success, Green maintained the same persona throughout his second WWE run and slowly earned praise from fans and pundits, such as Bully Ray of “Busted Open Radio.”

Regardless of his gimmick, Green’s victory may have been made sweeter by the fact that it was won by Michin. The duo had a brief rivalry during the fall, which saw Green defeat Michin in a regular match, before the latter got revenge by defeating Green in a Dumpster match.
