AFC Bournemouth announced the signing of the US junior international on Friday Matai Akinmboni of the MLS club DC United.
The move for 18-year-old Akinmboni was worth an initial $1.5 million with incentives that could potentially take it to $2.5 million, according to the Washington Post.
Akinmboni, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, made his MLS debut at age 15, becoming the third-youngest player in MLS history. He played 17 matches for DC United. He also played for the club’s USL affiliate, Loudoun United.
His contract with DC United ran through the end of the 2025 MLS season. Akinmboni joined the United States youth team at the under-17 level and recently made his under-20 debut during a 3-0 victory against the Republic of Korea. Akinmboni, born in the United States to Nigerian parents, is also eligible to represent the Super Eagles.
“We are delighted to sign Matai on a long-term deal with AFC Bournemouth,” Bournemouth technical director Simon Francis said in a statement. “He is an exciting young player who we have followed for a long time and have been impressed with his progress. Matai is a player who we believe has a very bright future and we look forward to seeing him develop with us.”
Akinmboni is set to join Bournemouth’s U21 squad.
“Matai is an exceptional young talent, and we couldn’t be prouder that he is taking the next step in his career to compete in the Premier League.” said DC United general manager Ally Mackay in a statement.
“This is another important milestone for our academy and Matai is testament to how we are able to organize different player development pathways. We wish Matai the best of luck in the next chapter of his career. “
