What you need to know
State of Wright and Clev. The states have been tied 5-5 against each other since February 2020, but not for long. The two will face off in a Horizon League battle on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET at the Wolstein Center. After losing a game the Raiders were expected to win, they now face the toughest task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.
Wright State’s offense and defense might be a little out of steam after their high-scoring game against Eastern Michigan last Saturday. Wright State fell to Eastern Michigan 86-82. The Raiders have now earned an “L” in back-to-back games.
Despite their loss, Wright State saw several players rise to the challenge and make remarkable plays. Brandon Noel, who went 7 of 9 on his way to 17 points plus eight rebounds, was perhaps the best of them all. The dominant performance also gave Noel a new career high in field goal percentage (77.8%). Another player who made the difference was Jack Doumbia, who went 7 of 9 on his way to 21 points plus four steals.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing it behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Clev. State). They earned a resounding 116-60 victory over Midway. This victory was familiar territory for the Vikings who have now won four games in a row.
Clev. State worked as a unit and finished the game with 28 assists. It’s a new trend for them: They averaged 9.4 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last five games they’ve averaged 19.8.
Wright State’s loss dropped its record to 7-7. As for Clev. State, their victory was their third in a row at home, which improved their record to 8-6.
While only Clev. State took care of its fans the last time they played, neither team was able to cover. For the future, Clev. State is the favorite in this one, as experts expect them to win by 1.5 points. They might be worth an early bet since they’ve covered the spread the last four times they’ve played.
Wright State was able to pull out a solid win over Clev. State in their previous meeting in January, winning 107-99. Does Wright State have another win up its sleeve, or will Clev. Is the State reversing the situation? We’ll have the answer soon enough.
