If the oddsmakers’ predictions hold true, the near future looks bright for New Mexico. They and the Fresno State Bulldogs will face off in a Mountain West battle on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET at the Save Mart Center. The Lobos strut with some offensive power as they have averaged 86.2 points per game this season.
Fresno State hopes to do what Colorado State couldn’t do Saturday: end New Mexico’s winning streak, which now stands at three. New Mexico came away with a 76-68 victory over Colorado State.
New Mexico relied on the efforts of Filip Borovicanin, who had ten points plus four steals, and Mustapha Amzil, who scored 14 points plus five rebounds. Borovicanin struggled to find his footing against VCU two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction.
Meanwhile, Fresno State couldn’t handle UNLV on Saturday and fell 87-77. The Bulldogs haven’t had much luck with the Rebels recently, as the team has come up short in their last two meetings.
This defeat does not tell the whole story, because several players had good matches. One of the most active was Jasir Tremble, who earned a 7 out of 10 on his way to 19 points. He struggled to find his footing against Cal Baptist last Saturday, so this was a nice turnaround. Another player who made the difference was Mykell Robinson, who had 18 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists.
Even though they lost, Fresno State worked as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. This is the most assists they have posted since January.
New Mexico’s win ended a four-game road drought dating back to last season and puts them at 10-3. As for Fresno State, their loss dropped their record to 4-9.
Keep an eye on the arc in Tuesday’s game: New Mexico has been dynamite from deep this season, making 36.8 percent of its threes per game. It’s a different story for Fresno State, as they’ve made just 29.9 percent of their threes this season. Given New Mexico’s considerable advantage in this area, Fresno State will need to find a way to close that gap.
New Mexico won against Fresno State in the teams’ last game in March by a clinching 79-58. The rematch might be a little tougher for New Mexico since the team won’t have home-court advantage this time around. We’ll see if the change of location makes a difference.
