A technical problem prevented the instant rereading technology from being used during Gervonta Davis against Lamont Roach Fight on Saturday, according to the New York State Athletic Commission.
Davis, the WBA Lightweight champion, took a knee in the ninth round against Roach so that he could wipe his eye after complaining that the fat of his braids bored him.
“I just style myself two days ago, and she put fat in my S ***,” said Davis later. “When you sweat and you are like that, fat entered my face and burned my eyes.”
A few seconds before Davis fell to a knee, he was struck with a left hand of Roach, the reigning champion of the WBA Super Featherweight. Veteran referee Steve Willis began to administer a number of 10 for Davis after taking the knee, but he stopped inexplicably and finally decided not to govern him.
Davis with an impromptu arrangement of Davis should have been considered a Knockdown, because the boxing rules are clear not to allow combatants to call their own waiting times. If Davis’ knee had been tried as a Knockdown, Roach would have won the competition on two of the three dashboards of the judges and made a gigantic upheaval on one of the largest sports stars. Instead, the fight ended with a controversial majority draw.
NYSAC uses instant rereading technology to cancel the decisions of the arbitrators if the committee considers that these decisions are incorrect. Most recently in February, on Keyshawn Davis against Denys Berinchyk Undercard in New York, Connor Coyle underwent a break on his left eye during his fight with Vito Mielnicki, which the referee judged from an accidental head confrontation. The use by NYSAC of instant rereading has canceled this decision, which means that if the fight was stopped due to the cup, Mielnicki would have been declared a winner rather than going to a technical decision.
A similar reversal was not possible on Saturday due to a technical problem, according to Nysac.
“During the round in question, following the request of the rereading video committee, there was a technical problem preventing the commission from receiving it within the time allocated for examination,” a spokesman for the NYSAC said in a statement. “Consequently, the decision in the referee’s ring was invoked and the fight continued.
“The Commission is devoted to the preservation of the integrity of combat sports and undertakes to work with all promotions and production teams – on behalf of athletes, officials and fans – to ensure that technical problems do not occur in the future which prevent the delivery of instant replay to the edge of the rings with the officials of the Commission if necessary.”
Nysac now examines the question. The Commission has the capacity to retroactively reverse Willis’ call on Saturday and therefore to modify the result of the fight – although such a decision is rare in boxing.
WBA president Gilberto Mendoza also told the ring that he was “ready” to continue an immediate revenge match between Davis and Roach.
The WBA has the power to order Davis to face Roach again, and the fact of not doing it could lead to the body of Davis of its belt. Davis also had a one -way revenge clause in his contract with Roach in the event that he did not emerge as a winner, allowing him to now trigger an immediate revenge match if he wished.
The two fighters indicated their desire for revenge on social networks in the days that followed the controversial fight.
