The TGL golf league – led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – continues its inaugural season Tuesday evening when Los Angeles Golf Club takes on Jupiter Links Golf Club in the second match hosted at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. After a year of delays, construction hurdles, and roster moves, the TGL is finally here.
So, what can golf fans expect?
The enhanced simulator golf matches will last approximately two hours and will take place primarily during prime time on Monday or Tuesday evenings from January through March. There will be 15 regular season games, a four-team playoff and a best-of-three final that will crown the inaugural TGL champion.
Matches will be played over 15 holes and will be split into two formats of play. The first session will see the teams work together in an alternate shot format before moving on to singles matches for the second session. The team with the most points at the end of the match will win. Similar to hockey, wins in TGL games are worth two points, overtime losses are worth one point, and regulation losses are worth zero points.

DATE Format
TGL matches will take place over 15 holes and two sessions. Players will hit full shots on grass, rough or sand on a simulation screen with short shots under 50 yards and putts taking place inside the SoFi Center on a rotating and adjustable green. There are also a few extra features, including timeouts, a shot clock, and a hammer, so let’s dive into them all.
Holes Nos. 1 to 9 – Triples (alternating shots 3 against 3): Two teams of three will compete in alternating shots during the first session. Let’s say Fowler hits the tee shot on #1. Fitzpatrick will then hit the approach shot and Schauffele will hit the first putt. This rotation will continue until the hole is completed.
Holes Nos. 10 to 15 – Singles (head-to-head play): After nine holes of triples, players will move on to singles, which is exactly what it sounds like. An individual from one team will play a hole against an individual from the other team and the winner will earn a point. The three players will play one hole before the cycle begins again on holes 13 to 15.
Over time: 3v3 competition as close as possible to the pin
Rating: Each hole is worth one point and ties are worth zero. There is no postponement.
The hammer: Each hole in a TGL match is worth one point unless a team decides to literally throw the “hammer” (not an actual hammer), which doubles the point value of that hole. A team can either accept the hammer and play that hole for two points, or refuse it and concede the hole. Each time the hammer is used during a match, it changes possession.
Shot clock: Players will have 40 seconds to make their shot or face a one-shot penalty.
Waiting times: Each team has four timeouts per match: two in triples and two in singles. There is no carryover from one session to the next.

Collin Morikawa’s Los Angeles Golf Club is a slight favorite over McIlroy’s Boston Common, but there’s another team a little further away that could make some noise. Atlanta Drive boasts exhibition golfer extraordinaire Justin Thomas, match-play savant Patrick Cantlay, excellent chase player Lucas Glover and total grinder Billy Horschel. If they play their cards right, they can easily win the crown by the end of the season.
