The Nebraska men’s basketball team opened the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic against Murray State on Sunday. Although the Huskers once again scored under 70 points for the third time this season, the defense allowed the fewest points scored in a game this season to earn the victory, 66-49.
Nebraska held the Racers to 17 of 55 from the floor, 7 of 27 from beyond the arc and 8 of 15 from the free throw line. The Huskers dominated the first half defensively, entering halftime with a 34-14 lead. Although Murray State outscored Nebraska in the second half 35-32, the Huskers remained consistent on offense.
Connor Essegian shined from beyond the arc for Nebraska, going 5 of 10 for a team-high 15 points. Andrew Morgan had a double-double in the game, scoring 12 points and grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds.
Rollie worse rounded out Nebraska’s double-digit scorers, going 4 of 5 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the free throw line to finish with 11 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
The Huskers improved to 8-2 on the season and will face Hawai’i in the tournament semifinal Monday night. Tip-off will take place at 9:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN 2.
