Reigning national champion Lakshya Chahar became the fourth Indian boxer to crash out in the first round of the inaugural World Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy. Competing in the men’s 80kg event, Chahar was knocked out in the third round by 2021 Asian Championships silver medalist Gheshlaghi Meysam of Iran on Monday. After losing the first round 2-3, Chahar got back into the game by winning the second round 3-2. He was tied on three cards before suffering a knockout in the final round.
All four Indian boxers who took to the ring here failed to qualify for the second round.
World Championships bronze medalist Deepak Bhoria (51kg), Asian Games bronze medalist Narender Berwal (92kg) and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Jaismine Lamboria (60kg) all lost their respective first rounds .
Five Indian boxers, including World Championships bronze medalist Mohammed Hussamudin and six-time Asian Championships medalist Shiva Thapa, are still in the running for Paris Olympic quotas here. A semi-final finish will guarantee a quota here.
India has so far secured four Olympic quotas for 2024 with Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) securing their entry into Paris at the Asian Games last year.
India had nine boxers competing at the Tokyo Olympics.
Boxers who do not obtain their quotas here will have one last chance to seal their passage to the Paris Games during the second world Olympic boxing qualification, scheduled in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3.
