Duke Jon Scheyer’s coach is “optimistic” that the versatile striker Maliq Brown will return this season from a shoulder injury.
The 6 -foot 9 inch junior was injured after playing only 10 minutes in the Blue Devils third victory in Virginia. He seemed to hurt his left arm while reaching a path to divert a bullet, and had his arm in a scarf thereafter.
Scheyer said that medical imaging had found nothing unexpected with what he described as a dislocated shoulder. The Blue Devils (23-3, 15-1 Conference of the Atlantic Coast) leave the League game to face the Illinois of Big Ten in Madison Square Garden in New York.
“We are optimistic that we can recover it this season,” said Scheyer during a virtual call with journalists. “I think the most difficult part is, a large part of this has to do with its stability, which is still quite painful. So we have to see how long it takes. »»
Scheyer said Brown would not play “next week at least” and said he would have been released for a few weeks. Duke has only five regular season games.
Brown, a Syracuse transfer, represents only 2.5 points and 4.1 rebounds on average. But its value went beyond raw numbers; Its ability to change and defend several positions on the bench was a key element of a defense which ranks fourth at the national level in the adjusted efficiency measurements of Kenpom by granting 90.9 points for 100 possessions.
Brown had recently returned from a lack of four games due to a knee injury.
“We need him, entirely healthy,” said Scheyer.
