LAWRENCE, Kan. — It was a shocker in Lawrence Tuesday afternoon, as West Virginia escaped Kansas with a 62-61 victory, ending the Jayhawks’ 33-game conference-opening winning streak.
West Virginia led the entire game. Kansas mounted a furious rally late in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.

The Mountaineers led by as many as 18 in the second half, but Kansas cut the lead to two points after a 15-2 run with six minutes remaining.
With Kansas down a point, David Coit stole West Virginia’s inside pass with just under 30 seconds left, but KJ Adams missed a contested shot at the rim.
The Jayhawks then fouled senior guard Javon Small, who made both free throws to make it 64-61.
Kansas tied it up on the next possession when Dajuan Harris found Zeke Mayo on a backdoor pitch and Mayo scored the layup plus the foul.
West Virginia regained the lead on the next play after Small lifted Flory Bidunga into the air on a pump fake and fouled him on a long two-point jumper with 1.8 seconds left. Small made the second of two free throw attempts to go up 62-61.
Kansas had one last chance to win the game when Hunter Dickinson threw a complete pass to KJ Adams. Adams launched a shot between three West Virginia defenders, but it was partially blocked as time expired. Kansas vehemently searched officials for a foul after the shot, but nothing was called.
Small finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for WVU. Eduardo Andre led the Mountaineers with 15 points and six rebounds.
Zeke Mayo carried the Kansas offense with 27 points. He was 13-13 from the free throw line. Hunter Dickinson had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Harris contributed 11 points and seven assists.

It was West Virginia’s first-ever victory at Allen Fieldhouse in 12 tries.
The Jayhawks fall to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. They are on their way to face UCF on Sunday.
