Catastrophe in Penn State: “Everyone must look in the mirror”
Fred Hoiberg thought that the pre-match shot was perhaps the best of the season before the tip against Penn State on Wednesday evening.
“We stolen, we were energetic, we were talking,” said Hoiberg on the Radio Network Huskers after the match. “Obviously, this has not translated.”
No, no.
A disaster found the Huskers immediately at State College, just as he did on Sunday in Northwestern. The difference between these two games was that the Nebraska had an answer to the Wildcats and overcome a deficit of 20 points in the second period.
Against Penn State, however? Nothing is left in the tank. There was no epic performance compared to that time.
Instead, it was a disappointing effort and embarrassing on the road that led to a defeat of 89-72 for the Huskers.
For a team that fights and claws to make a return trip to the NCAA tournament, this defeat will pass like a sore inch on the curled of their last seven games.
No juice. No energy. Nothing at the forefront of it. A certain search for soul goes towards the path of the Huskers.
“I said everyone had to look in the mirror, and it starts with me,” said Hoiberg. “I have to understand a group that will go there and put it on the line.”
The Nebraska record fell to the total of 17-10 in total and 7-9 in the Big Ten while Penn State improves at 14-13, 4-12.
The Nebraska never led in the match and dragged 23 points at halftime, 50-27. The Huskers had major problems to take care of the ball and experienced 16 reversals, including 11 in the first half.
The Nittany Lions drew on 66.7% of the field in first half – 61% for the match – and maintained an advantage of 16-6 in reversal points. Penn State also published Nebraska on the boards, 27-22, and caught seven offensive boards.
The Nittany Lions, seeing a defense without Berke Büyktunel, were in attack mode. They went 13 out of 14 on the free throw line and obtained a score of six two-digit players, including the Yanic Konan Niederhauser and the 6-8 Zach Hicks, who each finished with 19 points.
Connor Essegian came out of the bench to score 20 points for Nebraska while Andrew Morgan had 18 and Brice Williams 17. Williams saw his sequence at least 20 points ending in six games.
“Obviously, these are two following games where we started like that, and it is very disappointing what is at stake for our basketball team at the moment, with what is in front of us With the opportunities we have, “said Hooberg. “We played 15 minutes of good basketball during this trip. It’s not good enough. We have to find a way to start having a chance, you cannot continue to try to explain 20- No holes and expect to have the chance to win in this league.
Hoiberg wants more combat from his team, especially when things go wrong on the field. The right teams find a way to remain competitive. This is not what the Huskers were Wednesday.
“If you don’t compete, you don’t play with energy, I don’t care about the match plan – you will have no chance,” said Hoiberg. “You can go through each game in their game book, but if you don’t play with energy, you don’t play with an advantage, it doesn’t matter.”
