The PGA Tour will shift gears this week as a tougher test awaits players at the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open. Arriving at the cliffs of La Jolla, California, home of the Torrey Pines Golf Course, competitors will will find themselves on one of the longest and most difficult golf courses of the entire season.

Not only will the play be different from the first three weeks where birdies were held in groups, but so will the schedule. Moving the tournament pace forward by just one day, the Farmers Insurance Open will run from Wednesday to Saturday, leaving players with little time to prepare for this week’s exam.

Stars such as Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa opted out of playing this week for various reasons, but Sentry champion Hideki Matsuyama has his eyes on another trophy. Three times winner since the start of the 2024 season, the Olympic bronze medalist returns to a golf course where he has experienced almost everything except a victory.

The Japanese headlines and is joined by other international players such as Swede Ludvig Ã…berg, South Korean Sungjae Im, Australian Jason Day and Irish Shane Lowry. The large international contingent aims to maintain its early-season dominance, as all three PGA Tour winners in 2025 come from players who don’t wear the red, white and blue.

Tony Finau could be the first man to tally under the American victory column this year. Since his tournament debut in 2015, the six-time PGA Tour winner has finished in the top 25 in nine of his 10 appearances, including back-to-back top-10 finishes.

Will Zalatoris and Keegan Bradley also performed well at Torrey Pines, each notching the second-highest finishes of their playing careers in San Diego. Meanwhile, PGA Tour sophomore Max Greyserman has the look of a first-time winner, while native Californians Sahith Theegala, Maverick McNealy and Max Homa look to bring home a trophy.

2025 Farmers Insurance Open Field, Odds

  • Hideki Matsuyama (10-1): The early-season FedEx Cup leader has a great opportunity to extend its lead before the showpiece events begin. Matsuyama is making his 12th consecutive start at the Farmers Insurance Open, and it could be argued that he has never arrived with such quality in his game. Finishing in the top 15 in his last two trips, Matsuyama was one round away from seriously fighting in both cases. He’ll have to take care of the easier North Course in his only round there, but if he does, his second win of the season could be his way.
  • Ludvig Aberg (10-1): Ã…berg’s top-10 finish in his tournament debut last season confirmed what many golf fans thought when it came to his game: It translates better to more difficult golf courses. The 25-year-old returns to Torrey Pines after a top-five finish at Sentry where he threw the ball beautifully through four days of play. Surprisingly, it was Ã…berg’s driving that held him back at Kapalua, but if it returns to its normal level, he should be in the race on Saturday evening.
  • Tony Débat (20-1): Finau admitted to last week’s American Express that he’s less than 100 percent following offseason knee surgery. While it didn’t hinder him at the Sentry, Finau’s status was further questioned after his early release in Palm Springs. The good news is he’s coming to a golf course where he hasn’t done anything wrong throughout his career. The bad news is that it’s another long walk that will put continued pressure on that knee.
  • Sungjae Im (20-1): I opened American Express with a 77 and was guaranteed to miss the cut at the end of the first round. He played better over his next 36 holes, but the iron play was loose and his short game was little better. Im quietly driving the golf ball as well as ever, and that could lead to more success at Torrey Pines this week where he notched T6 and T4 finishes in 2022 and 2023.
  • Keegan Bradley (22-1)
  • Will Zalatoris (25-1): Course form and current form are converging for Zalatoris this week. Winless since his only victory at the 2021 St. Jude Championship, Zalatoris enters this week with a fantastic opportunity in front of him. Finishing T12 at American Express, the wiry right-hander relied heavily on his solid tee-to-green game. If this type of quality continues at Torrey Pines, Zalatoris will have a fighting chance as he has in three of his previous five tournament appearances.
  • Max Greyserman (25-1)
  • Jason Day (28-1)
  • Shane Lowry (30-1)
  • Sahith Theegala (30-1)
  • Maverick McNealy (30-1)
