Jannik Sinner had his appointment to the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the year withdrawn Thursday after being prohibited for three months after two failed drug tests, said an official. The world number one in Italy, which is the champion of the United States Open and the Australian, was tested twice positive for the traces of the anabolic steroid clostebol prohibited in March of last year. “After discussions by Laureus Academy, it was decided that the appointment of Jannik Sinner for Laureus World Sportsman of this year must be withdrawn,” said Prix Corps, Sean Fitzpatrick, the former Grand Grand of Rugby Union of New Zealand.
“We have followed this case, the decisions of the global organizations concerned and – while we note the attenuating circumstances involved – believe that the three -month ban makes the appointment ineligible.
“Jannik and his team were informed.”
Earlier in February, the 23 -year -old sinner accepted a three -month tennis ban after admitting “partial responsibility” for team errors that led him twice as a positive test in March 2024.
Its suspension ends on May 4, allowing it to come back in time for the French Open, the second Grand Chelem event of the season of the year.
The Laureus Awards have been offered each year since 2000 by a jury of 69 people made up of great athletes who make up the Laureus Academy.
In 2024, the tennis star Novak Djokovic won the Sportsman of the Year Award for a record.
