The R&A announced Thursday that the Open Championship will return to the Old Course at St. Andrews in 2027. Hosting the event for the final time in 2022, the Old Course was the site of Cameron Smith’s dramatic victory over Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young. . When the Open comes to town in two years, it will be the 31st time the championship has been held at St. Andrews – the most of any venue.
“I am extremely pleased to make my first announcement at the R&A. I am looking forward to the return of the Open to St Andrews as much as the fans and players,” said Mark Darbon, Managing Director of the R&A. said. “There is something incredibly special about the Open being played on the Old Course and so many great champions have walked these fairways since the first edition here in 1873.
“St Andrews is the birthplace of golf and generates a unique atmosphere for fans and players while providing an incredible spectacle on television and digitally to millions of viewers around the world. This promises to be another landmark event in one of the largest and most historic sporting events venues and we will do everything we can to make it a memorable experience for everyone involved.
With the announcement of the R&A, the four major championship venues for 2027 are now complete. Augusta National will host the Masters, as usual, while the PGA Championship will be held at PGA Frisco and the U.S. Open will return to Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The 2027 Open will also mark the 100th anniversary of Bobby Jones’ incredible victory at St. Andrews. This triumph was Jones’ second in a row in the championship having won the Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes the previous year.
