India’s Nishant Dev beat and outclassed his Mongolian opponent Otgonbaatar Byamba-Erdeneto in just over two minutes to advance to the 71kg pre-quarterfinals of the second World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Bangkok on Tuesday. However, Abhinash Jamwal was unlucky to be eliminated in the 63.5kg category. Nishant started with a flurry of punches against Mongolian Otgonbaatar Byamba-Erdeneto to force a countout in the first minute. A combination of a jab and a cross hook led to another count and the referee stopped the contest (RSC) with 58 seconds left in the first round.
Earlier, Jamwal fought back bravely after losing a close first round to Colombian Jose Manuel Viafara Fory.
He clearly dominated the third and final round, forcing a tie on points between all five judges. As per the rules, the judges were asked again to evaluate the performance and decide the winner; Everyone finally voted in favor of Fory after a long deliberation to seal the final score 5:0 for the Colombian.
The third Indian boxer, Sachin Siwach will face Denmark’s Frederik Jensen in the 57kg round of 16 later in the day.
Earlier on Sunday, World Championships bronze medalist boxer Nishant also secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Armando Bighafa of Guinea-Bissau.
Nishant never seemed under any pressure as he controlled the fight from the first minute and also continued with his flurry of punches in the second round to put the opponent completely on the back foot and undoubtedly get the unanimous verdict of the judges.
