Unfortunately, Jake “The Snake” Roberts is starting the new year with more stumbles than big steps. On his podcast “The Snake Pit” The WWE Hall of Famer revealed he was recovering from a particularly bad case of pneumonia.
“I got incredibly sick. I ended up going to the hospital,” Roberts said. “Come to find out, I had pneumonia. It’s not a good thing for me. I already had COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). And having pneumonia is like flirting with disaster over there.”
The 69-year-old “Master of DDT” also said his hospital stay revealed other underlying issues that will need to be addressed sooner rather than later.
“I had blood in my urine. I didn’t know it,” he said. “I have some blood loss somewhere in my gut, which is causing my iron levels to drop. And to top it all off, I had a problem with my (heart). But when I got in there, I got it caught, and we have to go get some procedures done. Everything will be fine then.
As of 2020, Roberts has worked as a coach and on-screen character for AEW, although he has spent more time off television than on it. His tenure was marked by a series of health problems, including a foot operation in 2021, and a respiratory problem that required prolonged use of oxygen. Fans are also familiar with Roberts’ battle with addiction, although he has remained sober since the early 2010s. On a positive note, Roberts’ sobriety eventually led to a reunion with his ex-wife Cheryl, whose Fans may remember his 1988 feud with “Ravishing” Rick Rude. His last appearance on screen dates back to October, at the direction of La Faccion Ingobernables.
Still, Roberts retains his dark sense of humor. “I can’t wait to have a camera shoved up my ass and another down my throat, and they meet in the middle.”
